WUDL Travel Team Kicks Off 2022 With Trophies "At" Lexington

The WUDL Travel Team was hard at work over the MLK weekend, competing against students from as far away as California and Florida at the Lexington Winter Invitational. “Big Lex” is an important step on our travel team journey, as students prepare for our National Qualifiers, starting next weekend. WUDL was well represented, with two schools (CMIT, with teams in Novice and JV, and Montgomery Village Middle School, with teams in Novice) making their travel team debut and others picking up their first hardware.

BASIS DC, in their second travel tournament ever, stole the show once again. In the JV Division, 2nd year debaters Alex and Noemie advanced to the Semi-Final Round, defeating a team from Success Academy (NY) in the Quarter-Finals, before losing to the tournament champions from Mamaroneck (NY). Their teammate, Sitara, who was one of the youngest debaters in the division as an 8th grader, was the 6th overall speaker. Freshman Madison from Banneker was the 7th overall speaker, and sophomore Haven was 8th, the first award that Phelps High School has ever won outside of the league.

We’re excited to see the travel team attend their last tournament of the semester “at” Pennsbury in a few weeks. Many thanks to volunteers Jess Berenson, Chloe Foster-Jones, and Eric Clarke for their support this weekend!
