WUDL Kicks Off 7th Debate Season Online!
Debate is back! The 2021-2022 local season has officially started, and we're so excited to hear what our young scholars have to say about the Water resources topic. While we aren't fully back to normal yet, we're getting closer to a return to in-person debate, and can't be more excited either way. A majority of our participants were new competitors, with robust competition in our Novice and Rookie Divisions.
Some of the highlights:
Coaches are under-appreciated All-Stars making debate possible, so we decided to buy everyone dinner despite the remote setting. We also instituted two new awards:
Largest Team: Won this weekend by last year's Sweepstakes Winning team, Stuart Hobson, coached by Kip Plaisted and Myles Caliguire.
Best Team Performance: Won this weekend by Basis DC for their great performance across multiple divisions.
Next tournament, we'll introduce a 3rd award for the team that grows the most.
Emmanuel and Nathaniel made their Varsity debut late last year, but were hungry for more. They attended the Georgetown University Summer Debate Seminar, and started their season at the Georgetown Day School tournament in late September. Their hard work paid off, as they won the Varsity Division this weekend.
Alexander and Noemie only lost once last year, tearing through the Novice and JV divisions. This weekend, they made their Varsity debut, and while they didn't quite win the entire division, they were the top two speakers. Basis DC also had a great showing in the JV division, with Sitara and Violet taking the top spot and the top speaker awards. They won't be in JV for much longer.
Phelps High School's Ayotunde and Nyoami won the Novice division, in Nyoami's first tournament ever. This is the first time that Phelps has ever won their division, and we're so excited to see all the new debaters.
Shout out to New Coach Marcus Peterson at EL Haynes. His squad brought 5 teams, and won awards in both divisions that the entered, including Angie being the top speaker in Novice, and Chiamaka and Simone winning the Rookie Division.
As with every season opener, many teams are just getting up and running, and will debut at our Halloween competition on October 30th, where we hope to see you!
