WUDL Ends First Semester on High Note

"It's been so much fun and their lives are forever impacted." - New WUDL Coach after the 1st semester.

"It was a great tournament and a pleasure to interact with so many hard-working kids. It was also my daughter's first tournament, and she had a blast." -- WUDL Parent and volunteer judge

The Washington Urban Debate League wrapped up the first semester of the 2020 - 2021 academic year. This has been a semester of unparalleled challenges, largely stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nevertheless, students and teachers have persevered. This past weekend, we hosted the largest tournament of the semester yet.

In Varsity, Kailey/Michelle went undefeated to win the Division, while Capital City's Joey and Clarke finished 2nd overall.

In JV, Jalen/Alisha went undefeated, winning the division. Stuart Hobson, Walls, DCI, Lanham, Croom, And Banneker also had very strong showings, with 3-1 records.

In Novice, Noemie/Alexander of Basis DC won the Division, but CMIT stole the show. CMIT entered 4 teams, and didn't lose a single round. We are so proud of the growth of this new team, and look forward to seeing them (and Basis) in JV next semester. Great job Coaches Ryan and Karam.

I'd also like to shout out Thurgood Marshall, Eastern, and Capitol Hill Montessori for their second consecutive strong, trophy winning performances. We were excited to see Girls Global Academy make their debuts as well, and Friendship Tech Prep won their first trophy!

In Rookie, Basis DC's Pierce/Seth won the division, with Creative Minds and Stuart Hobson hot on their tale. We'd like to shout out new program Social Justice for their strong tournament, and William of College Park Academy for his strong performance as a maverick.

At the end of the 1st semester, there are a number of teams in the hunt for the Sweepstakes Cup:

Greenbelt, Stuart Hobson, Lanham, Banneker, Capital City, Walls, Alice Deal, and Basis.

Shout out to the 80 volunteers who made this last tournament possible, especially Ohm Gore, who stepped into the tab room on short notice and helped us run a smooth event.
