Stuart Hobson Brings Middle School National Championship back to D.C.

This past weekend, the Washington Urban Debate League proudly sent 6 teams to represent us at the Urban Debate Middle School National Tournament. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, this tournament grew bigger and more competitive, brings together teams from leagues across the nation in middle school.

This year, the Washington Urban Debate League was represented by:

  • Stuart Hobson: Dinkins / Cole

  • Stuart Hobson: Neuroth / Sokolov

  • DC International: McCauley / Sousa

  • Capital City: Joyner / Raynor

  • Montgomery Village: Elangovan / Aulakh

  • Oyster Adams: Leonard / Goldblatt

After the preliminary rounds, every league advanced at least one team to elimination rounds, including five of our six WUDL representatives. The two Stuart Hobson teams went undefeated in preliminary rounds, and were the first two seeds. We also won a number of speaker awards:

2nd Speaker: Dinkins

4th Speaker: Sousa

7th Speaker: Leonard

12th Speaker: McCauley

13th Speaker: Aulakh

17th Speaker: Elangovan

18th Speaker: Cole

20th Speaker: Joyner

21st Speaker: Neuroth

23rd Speaker: Sokolov

Oyster Adams and Montgomery Village finished as Octo-Finalists

DC International finished as Quarter-Finalists

Stuart Hobson Dinkins and Cole finished a Semi-Finalists

Stuart Hobson's Neuroth and Sokolov advanced to the Finals against Edison (Tulsa), and on a narrow, 2-1 decision, emerged victorious!

They have defended the Urban Debate Middle School National Title, first captured by Kenmoor in 2019, and defended last year by Inspired Teaching in 2020!

Many congrats to Tulsa BB for a hard fought final round, some incredible conversations about Criminal Justice Reform from all of our competitors.
