WUDL Brings Home MS National Championship again!

Good Afternoon,

This past weekend, the Washington Urban Debate League competed in the Middle School Urban Debate National Tournament, bringing together the best middle school debaters from urban debate leagues from around the country.

The WUDL qualified 6 teams, and all were amazingly successful this weekend.

Inspired Teaching's David Sipos and Samantha Perkins went undefeated the entire weekend, finishing as the 2nd seed overall in preliminary rounds and won the tournament. They are our 2020 Middle School National Champions.

Capital City's Joey Villaflor and Jener Balk finished 3-1 in preliminary rounds and also won out through the elimination rounds before finally being defeated by Inspired Teaching, finishing as the 2nd overall team in the tournament.

Capital City's Simone Joyner and Akesh Mallia, Washington Latin's Brooke Roberson and Naimh O'Donovan, and EL Haynes's Cordell Eddings and Stanley Azoroh all also broke to elimination rounds with a 3-1 preliminary record, and lost in the Octo-Final Rounds. Stephanie Macieko and Tremayne Bivens also did well, winning their negative rounds (and Stephanie got a perfect 30 speaker score in one round).

We are incredibly proud of everyone who qualified, they put in incredible amounts of hard work and dedication over the last few months, even in the face of a pandemic.

Beyond the competitors, more than 40 WUDL students (and a few teachers and principals) logged on to watch rounds and cheer for their school and league-mates, even from teams with no stake in the competition. This sense of community and solidarity is awesome and warms my heart, so thank you to all those who logged in to watch.

The story of this tournament wouldn't be complete without a huge THANK YOU to thank all of the members of the WUDL community that helped out and assisted with the tournament, either helping prepare students to compete by watching practices and such, or as judges during the tournament: Darrian Carroll, Eric Clarke, Michael Fuentes, Arrielle Giordano, Ny Glover, Wil Hawk (Capital City), Selah Lee-Bey (Washington Latin), Alex Pappas, Raffi Piliero, Renee Reneau, Andrew Samuelson, and Zoe Spielvogel (EL Haynes). Also a big shout out to our Program Coordinator Dara Davis for leading our prep sessions for the competition.
