WUDL Travel Team Has Strong Finish To Season

This past weekend, the Washington Urban Debate League Travel Team ended its season in style at the Lakeland-Westchester Invitational. Hosted at Lakeland High School in upstate New York, the tournament drew in an array of high quality competitors from across the northeast.

The WUDL was represented by five teams, including many of our seniors concluding their regional careers.

Seniors Kevin Tezi/Munyang Tengen and Kaitlyn McClinton/Elizabeth Ballah had their best travel tournaments yet, finishing with a .500 record. Both teams have explored completely new literature and arguments over the winter, doing a deeper dive into critical race theory. They've done debate the right way, requesting numerous articles and books from local college libraries and challenged themselves to read advanced texts and immerse themselves in the ideas instead of just looking for a few cards to get a quick win. We are incredibly proud of their scholarship.

Juniors Mak Aneke and Michelle Njoku also had a good weekend, their first .500 record at a travel competition. They hadn't attended several recent trips and really stepped up to show that they belonged on competing at this level. I am really proud of their growth and hard work.

Senior Ernest Ntangu and junior Justin Sayoto, sophomore Zara Escobar, and Freshman Lucy Chamberlain had a rough weekend, with some tough breaks going the other way, but still had a respectable showing. Competition on the regional circuit is really tough, and we look forward to their continued success in the future.

Many thanks to WUDL Volunteers (and UDL alumnas) Sierra Wood and Danielle Dupree for coming with us as coaches, chaperones, and judges.
