The 2018-2019 season is full of firsts for the Washington Urban Debate League.
This year, we'll formally kick off our Lawyer's Committee, a partnership between the WUDL and the D.C. area legal community.
Modeled on several successful partnerships between the legal community and urban debate leagues on the west coast, the Committee will raise funds and provide support for the league, bring students to law firms for educational visits to local law firms, and provide mentorship opportunities.
The partnership between the law and debate is obvious. Many debaters choose careers in the legal field, as attorneys, paralegals, or as non-practicing lawyers engaged in politics, policy, or advocacy. The skills developed in debate are those used by attorneys every day--critical thinking, research, argument analysis, and strategic communications. Partnering with urban debate leagues is an especially powerful partnership as a talent pipeline of motivated, diverse students into legal careers.
Stay tuned for more information about our kick off this fall!
