Kicking off the new year in style!
The Washington Urban Debate League kicked off its second year with style this past weekend at Banneker High School, our reigning sweepstakes champions. Banneker did a took a good first step towards defending their title, with the team of Evans and Nash taking 1st place in the Varsity Division, and the teams of Crouch and Estrada, and Sadler and Brown also receiving trophies. In the novice division, the team of Peay and Pendleton took second place. Evans and Nash are the first pair of women to win a WUDL tournament, and we're exceedingly proud of their accomplishment. Evans also won top speaker in the varsity division at the tournament.
While the Banneker team were excellent hosts, several other schools made it interesting. The team of Scott-Reid and Hinant from Largo High School took 3rd place, and the team of Roberts and McCall, also from Largo High School took 5th. DC International's Almendarez ranked as the 8th speaker in the varsity division, despite only being in 7th grade.
In the novice division, this tournament represents a big coming out party for DC Prep EMC. The team of Tan and Headly, in their first tournament ever, won the novice division, and Tan took top speaker. The team of Scott and Love, also from DC Prep EMC took 3rd place. The four of them, along with second ranked speaker Frone from DC International, all attended the Matthew H. Ornstein Washington Summer Debate Institute, and are great examples of the how much our students learned at camp.
Two schools competed in their first tournament ever this past weekend, Washington Latin and E.L.Haynes. Haynes was the first team to start meeting over the summer, and it paid off big time. Reyes, mavericking in his first tournament, took 4th place in the novice division, and 4th speaker, while the team of Green and Cowley took 5th.
