Invest in Debate in the Washington Area!

The Washington Urban Debate League is making smart "cool" again, training the next generation of young leaders to advocate for themselves and their communities. We reduce barriers to participation in debate and bring the associated educational benefits to under-served communities in D.C. and the surrounding areas.

To reach more students and add more schools, we need your help.

WUDL was selected as "one of the best" local non-profits by the Greater D.C. Catalogue of Philanthropy and as the 2017-18 Outstanding League by the National Association of Urban Debate Leagues (NAUDL).

Demand for our program is off the charts. At our first tournament in 2015, 13 students from 3 schools faced off. This year, despite the pandemic, we are serving hundreds of students from more than 50 schools in our after school debate program, and thousands of students more through other initiatives.

To do so, we need your support.

Concrete Results of Every Dollar:

  • $10,000: Sponsors an entire tournament for hundreds of debaters across the area.

  • $5,000: Support an entire school's team of debaters for a season, enabling dozens more students to find their voice.

  • $2,500: Give a coach the tools and training needed to maximize their skills

  • $1,000: Fund a Saturday Workshop where students gather to research and discuss the issues of the day.

  • $100: Supply a team with expandable folders, paper, highlighters, and other tools they'll need to succeed.

  • $25: Sends a pair of students to a local WUDL Tournament, including trophies, meals, entry, and facility costs.

94% of the WUDL Budget is spent on programmatic expenses, so your dollars go straight to the classroom. Our army of volunteers ensures your dollar goes further and is spent on the essentials.

Debate is a great investment:

Debaters spend an average of 350 hours per year learning critical thinking and research skills.

It costs $2.11/hr to offer this opportunity to a student through debate, and $16.34/hr per student per hour in a DCPS School
