Dear WUDL Family,
As we prepare for a debate season about the criminal justice system, it is not lost on us how relevant this topic is to current events. If it wasn't enough that Black communities have been disproportionately impacted by the COVID pandemic, now this community is once again facing police brutality. Our criminal justice system is broken and people like George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and so many more have had to pay the cost with their lives.
At the Washington Urban Debate League, our mission is to uplift young people by teaching them the advocacy skills they will need to fight social and racial injustice. We are more committed than ever to providing students with evidence that helps expose the injustices in our society. We encourage vigorous, honest, and evidence-based debate about difficult and important issues facing our students, teachers, and community, and reject attempts to silence peaceful expression or spread misinformation. We cannot be silent in the face of injustice and education is the first step!
We are so proud to see so many members of the WUDL community participating in protests and using their vote to elect people committed to social justice. There is still so much to be done but we can do it together.
Although we remain physically distanced and much uncertainty looms ahead of us, let us remember that we are so much stronger when we come together and support each other. I hope to see many of you at the Ornstein Summer Debate Institute in just over a month.
