New Teams Debut at WUDL 2nd Tournament of 19-20

November 8, 2019

Last weekend, the Washington Urban Debate League hosted their second tournament of the season.

First of all, many thanks to DC International, who stepped in to host us on short notice. DCI has always been a great partner, and we really appreciate the assist.

This weekend was a bit of a coming out party for the largest team this season, Inspired Teaching!

They won 5/7 awards in the rookie division, including two undefeated teams. Coach Meiman, a senior at George Washington University, has done a great job building the team over there in just two short months!

Browne EC made their season debut, and took home a lot of hardware too, led by Desmond Davis and Emmanuela Tapande. We are very excited to have Hugh Browne back in the fold after a year's hiatus. They clearly didn't miss a beat.

In Novice, Banneker announced with a bang that their team was back, with new coach Sara Arndt. India Gerald/Zojeilah King and Kathleen Wages/Hasan Aquil took 1st and 2nd place, going undefeated. Inspired Teaching rounded out the top 3 with another undefeated performance. Kublai Kolb of DCI, the home team, was the top speaker, and Ajani Ajibola was 2nd.

In JV, Joey Villaflor and Simone Joyner of Capital City went undefeated and took 1st place. Inspired Teaching's David Sipos and Samantha Perkins took 2nd, while DCI, Cap City, and Bowie Middle School took rounded out the top 5. Special shout out to Liv Birnstad, who has taken home trophies in her first two tournaments ever, skipping novice and going straight to JV.

Ernest Ntangu/Justin Sayoto and Paola Almendarez/Lola Rogin will be going back and forth all season for the top spot in the Varsity Division, and were true to form, trading 1st and 2nd place in the first two tournaments. Capital City's Brandon Green and Clarke Dickens won their first Varsity trophies this season, snagging the 5th place trophy.

A special thank you to Maggie Meiman and the international service sorority at George Washington University. Her team came out in force and judged all day. We are very excited to work with this partner going forward.
