Happy Holidays from the Washington Urban Debate League! We've planned a busy schedule over the break to create some new teaching tools for our partner schools, but before that, we have a tournament to report on.
The WUDL Holiday tournament was held this past weekend at DC Prep EMC. Bill and the rest of the team at DC Prep were excellent hosts, and students and judges alike spoke glowingly of the welcoming, vibrant atmosphere at DC Prep.
The results were equally as exciting. Banneker returned to the fray (and their usual place near the top of the standings). Banneker's Evans and Nash won their second tournament of the year, while Banneker's Crouch and Tanner (3rd), and Francis and Sadler(4th) also placed in Varsity. Largo's Hinant and Scott-Reid took 2nd place, while DuVal's Collins and Young took 5th place, the first team award for their school.
In the Novice Division, Green and Reyes of EL Haynes won their second tournament, cementing their rise to Varsity in January. Stuart Hobson (Thompson and Soltani) continued their meteoric rise in the standings, going undefeated in the tournament and taking 2nd place. Bumbaugh and Davis of Oyster Adams both won their first trophies (4th place), and DCI's Jordan and Teasdale took 5th place.
We're excited to announce that Columbia Heights won their first trophies with a dominant 3-1 performance from Clarke and Queen. They took the 3rd place trophy in the Novice Division, and Clarke also took 2nd place individual speaker. Coach Cohen is doing a great job over there, and we're excited to see his students in January.
This weekend, we're hosting a workshop for students and coaches in Prince George's County designed to help them get up to speed and prepared for debates in the Spring. We're excited to get to work bringing policy debate to PG!
